It’s a Tuesday night. A guy you’ve never heard of drops 14 points off the bench, and you’re up out of your seat. Why? Because he’s on your team.
That’s fantasy basketball in one scene. You pick real NBA players, and what they do in real games becomes your score. Nobody expects you to know the whole league on day one. Five names is plenty to begin with.
What is fantasy basketball?
You’re the manager. That is all. You do not run, shoot, and pass, and no one will expect that from you. You pick your starters and benched players, and when the player does not help anymore, you replace him.
Other managers have teams too, and yours plays theirs. Depending on the league, that’s one opponent a week, or one big race to the highest total. Hot shooters are great. They also cool off, usually right after you start counting on them.Just give it a week or two. Confusing as it might seem at first, it becomes clear once you make your first scores.
Pick your league type.
Who do you want to play against? Friends, probably. A private league is the easiest way into fantasy basketball, because you make the rules and nobody’s cash is at stake. The trash talk is half the fun anyway.
Public leagues are another route, with strangers from everywhere. Some are free. Some charge to enter and pay the top finishers. That’s a lot of pressure for a first try.Go free first. You can always move up later. If you’re stuck, our fantasy basketball league guide can point you somewhere before you join anything.
How scoring works
Most beginners trip over this part, so go slow. Every league writes its own rules. Your settings page has the real answer, so read it before the draft and not after.
You’ll mostly see three styles.
Points. Each stat is worth a number. A made shot, a rebound, and an assist all add something to your total. Your players do things, and your score grows.
Categories, often called roto. In this game, you will compete individually against statistics such as scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks, with whoever has the higher total in a statistic winning it. The team which excels in everything can easily outshine the team which excels in only one thing.
Head-to-head. One opponent a week. You win or lose, and those results pile up over the year. Top records make the playoffs.
Want official steps for any of these? Yahoo’s help page and ESPN’s setup guide both walk you through starting a league.
Get ready for the draft.
Write your ranked list the night before. I mean it. The clock in a draft room is mean, and people make silly picks when it’s ticking. Put your favorites at the top and keep a backup for each round you can picture.
Positions matter too. Leagues often use PG, SG, SF, PF, and C, plus flex spots like G, F, and UTIL. A player who fits two of them is handy when someone gets hurt. Don’t grab five guards if the league wants a center, though.
Snake drafts are the usual starting point. The order flips every round, so whoever picks last in round one picks first in round two. Auctions are different. Everyone gets a budget, everyone bids, and it’s really easy to blow it on one big name. For a first fantasy basketball draft, I’d stay with the snake.
Manage your team during the season.
Check your starters before the game starts. Your ace on the bench doesn’t score anything, and it hurts even more than missing shots. Stay tuned for the injuries and minutes, since the coach could switch his starting five at the drop of a hat.
Free agents are players not owned by anyone. If you have an injured player on your roster, check the free agent list for a replacement. Trades can help, but if one looks way too good for you, it will probably start an argument.
How often should you log in? Daily works. Weekly works too, if you stick to it. Those who lag behind are those who took off for a month. Fantasy basketball gives an advantage to those who attend regularly.
Common beginner mistakes
Stacking one NBA team is the big one. That team loses three in a row, and your whole roster goes down with it. Spread your picks around.Forgetting the bench is another. Those are your backups, so give them a look now and then. And panic. One awful week feels like doom. It almost never is, since players go cold and then warm back up. Wait a few weeks before you start trading everybody.
Your next step
That’s the basic rundown. Decide which league format you want to join, learn its scoring system, and prepare your team list. Then sign up for a league and play a whole season, because practice makes perfect.
This week, choose a league. Before the first pick, open your draft board. Want more help after that? Our fantasy basketball tips page is a good next stop.
